This 100 year old house in the trees had many small rooms, a low ceiling, and small windows. More importantly, the walls had no framing or insulation and the plumbing and electricity needed updating. We rebuilt the walls, and subfloor, installed larger windows, removed the low ceiling and installed skylights and new wood floors, a new kitchen, new fireplace, and added a laundry room, as well as redoing the siding, and adding a deck. One of the most exciting discoveries was that the ceiling was made of 18 foot spans of perfectly preserved redwood with no knots. We wanted to keep the 1920s woodsy feel of the house, rather than transform it into something completely modern that didn’t fit the house size, history and landscape. So we recycled the redwood by creating accent beams in the ceiling, as well as stair banisters. We continued the coloring into the cherry cabinets in the kitchen, but did white uppers to add some brightness and cleanness to the room.
